ENGLISH NATIONALS: AN OVERVIEW

Your path to the global Magic stage—and your chance to play alongside your fellow countrymen for fame, fortune, and national pride—starts here with the 2017 Nationals!

Do you have what it takes to represent England against the rest of the world? Nationals pits the country’s best against each other, with the finalists of the event earning an invitation to the World Magic Cup to represent their country battle for the ultimate national bragging rights.

Each of the 73 countries that will compete in the 2017 World Magic Cup, will run one Nationals to determine who will join their top Pro Point earner from the 2016-17 season on their national team.

You can win 2 byes to the English Nationals on Friday 15th Sept, at Last Chance Trials at Roundhouse, Derby

 

FORMAT

Friday

If you are already qualified, win two byes for the Nationals at Friday's  STANDARD or SEALED Trials. Flights of 32 launch between 2pm and 7pm.

If you have not yet qualified, and you are an eligible English citizen or resident: win a place in the STANDARD or SEALED Last Chance Qualifiers. Flights of 32 launch between 2pm and 7pm.

 

Saturday & Sunday

The Swiss rounds will take place on Saturday and Sunday, and the Top 8 playoff will also take place on Sunday.

The formats for Nationals is a mixture of Standard Constructed and Booster Draft.

Saturday. Standard (3 rounds) – Draft # 1 (complete) – Draft # 2 (Deck build, 1 round)

Sunday. Draft # 2 (last 2 rounds) – Standard (3 rounds) – Top 8 (Standard, Single Elimination)

PRIZES

 

Each participant in 2017 Nationals will receive an alternate-art Inkmoth Nexus promotional card (while supplies last).

The winner will be crowned their country’s national champion AND will receive an invitation and a travel award to compete on their country's national team at the 2017 Magic Cup in December 1-3, 2017 in Nice, France AND will receive an exclusive Nationals Top 8 playmat.

The finalist will receive an invitation and a travel award to compete on their country's national team at the 2017 World Magic Cup in December 1-3, 2017 in Nice, France AND will receive an exclusive Nationals Top 8 playmat.

3rd to 8th place will each receive a crate (that's 6 boxes) of Ixalan when released AND an exclusive Nationals Top 8 playmat.

Everyone else on a winning record of 22 points will share a generous prize pool

RESIDENCY & ELIGIBILITY

The terms of Nationals is determined by Wizards of the Coast. Eligibility and residency requirements are found on the Premier Event Invitation Policy (Section 4).

2017 English Nationals are open only to those qualified players who are citizens or have been residents of that country since January 1, 2016.

If you are planning to participate in an upcoming Nationals tournament, your first step should be to verify with Wizards that you are listed under the correct nationality. To do this, just sign into the Planeswalker Points website by clicking on the Sign In button in the upper right corner of the page and entering your Wizards Account login ID and password.

Participants must be an English citizen or have been a continuous resident of the country since the first of the previous calendar year and must earn an invitation issued by Wizards to the English Nationals by achieving one of the following standings:

If your nationality needs to be corrected, please liaise direct with Wizards to arrange this. Fill in an appeal immediately using the link here. Nationality-related appeals will be given high priority by Wizards during the season. If you have a Wizards Account, you can contact customer service through wizards.custhelp.com. If you do not have a Wizards Account, you can create one at accounts.wizards.com, and then use online help at wizards.custhelp.com.

 

RULES

  • Tournaments are run at Competitive REL (Rules Enforcement Level) with an 8x Planeswalker Points Multiplier
  • There are 12 rounds
  • Swiss rounds are 50 minutes long and best two out of three matches
  • The Top 8 players at the end of the Swiss advance to the playoffs
  • Playoff matches are best two out of three, single elimination, and untimed
  • Decklists are required

 

TOURNAMENT BYES

  • You can earn two- round byes at the Last Chance Trials on Friday 15th September at Roundhouse, Derby
  • Players receive a number of byes at Nationals based on the Pro Tour Players Club membership level of the player (as of the date of the Nationals), membership in the Pro Tour Hall of Fame, or by reaching the appropriate yearly Planeswalker Point threshold.
  • Second-Round Byes:
    • Players with a Pro Tour Players Club level of Platinum
  • First-Round Byes:
    • Players with a Pro Tour Players Club level of Gold
    • Members of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame
    • Players who reach the appropriate yearly Planeswalker Point threshold, based on the criteria below:

REFUND POLICY

Players who cancel after 6pm the night before or on the day but prior to the event can be refunded IF we can fill their space. Again, text: 07899034266.

However, there are no refund for players who simply do not turn up for the event.

The Roundhouse Derby has a beautiful green area just in front of it, with benches and plenty of space to sit down and relax. The building itself is a majestic refurbished 19th century railway building with a nice open plan feel and multiple rooms, many of which we'll be using for our various events over the weekend.

 
 
In terms of accessibility, The Roundhouse has level thresholds, lift access to all rooms and floors, and a colour and signage scheme that provides easy navigation for the partially and non-sighted.

Friday 2pm to Midnight
Saturday & Sunday 8.30am to Midnight.
 

Catering:

Food will be provided by The Roundhouse. Breakfast will be out from 8:30-11am, lunch will be served from 11:30 onwards and the evening meal service will finish at 10pm. Sandwiches, tea, coffee and other snacks will be on sale in the confectionery room, near the kitchen, in the main room of The Roundhouse.


Transport:
The Roundhouse is easily accessible from just about anywhere in the UK. It’s set in the historic Railway Quarter of Derby, the UK’s most central city.
--Derby train station, a minute away from The Roundhouse, is a big interchange point for East Midlands trains both to and from London, amongst other big cities.
--By car, The Roundhouse is just opposite Derby train station at the end of Pride Park Business Park, near Derby's football stadium.
 
Parking:
Free Parking (180 spaces) is available on site, for event players only, on a first come first served basis. Drivers should pull up the Roundhouse Car Park, say ‘Axion Now’ to the gate keeper to be let in.

By Road:

We are a 10-minute drive from the M1 (J25) and 30 minutes from the M6, Derby is at the heart of the motorway network. The Roundhouse is situated on Pride Park, Derby. The most direct routes are via the M1/A38 and M1/A52.
 
From the M1 North:
Exit at junction 28. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto A38 heading to Derby/ Matlock/Alfreton/B600. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Alfreton Rd/A61 heading to M1/ Derby/Nottingham/A52/Loughboro’/ A6. Continue to follow A61. Go through 3 roundabouts. At The Pentagon Roundabout, take the 5th exit onto Eastgate/A52. Take the ramp to St Alkmund’s Way/ A601. Turn left onto St Alkmund’s Way/A601. Turn left onto Station Approach/B6000. Continue onto Pride Parkway. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Roundhouse Road. The Roundhouse is at the end of the road.
 
 
From the M1 South:
Exit at junction 25. At the roundabout take the first exit onto A52 (west) to Derby. Travel along the A52 for approximately 6 miles. Bear left at fork signposted for Wyvern/Pride Park/Pride Park Stadium. At first roundabout take the third exit onto Derwent Parade. At the second roundabout take the second exit. At the third roundabout take the second exit. At the fourth roundabout take the third exit onto Pride Parkway. At the next roundabout take the first exit into Roundhouse Road. The Roundhouse is at the end of the road. 
 

Nearest Airport:

Derby is just 15 minutes from East Midlands Airport and just five miles from the M1 motorway.

 
 
Accessibility:
If you have special requirements, such as fixed seating please contact us in advance so we are able to plan to make sure your experience is as good as possible.

Listed buildings can often pose difficulties for those with limited mobility or other disabilities. However, when The Roundhouse was refurbished and restored, one of the key requirements was that the design scheme should create an environment that is easily accessible to everyone.

This has certainly been achieved. Level thresholds, lift access to all rooms and floors, and a colour and signage scheme that provides easy navigation for the partially and non-sighted have all been incorporated into the renovation of The Roundhouse.

The Roundhouse also includes the following features which make it a unique and friendly event space, accessible for all.

    Pedestrian access routes at each corner, minimising travel distances
    Raised lawns are wheel chair accessible to ensure everyone can access the landscaped areas
    Disabled parking spaces are located suitably close to their respective entrances
    A compound for guide dogs is available which provides for exercise, feeding, drink and latrine requirements
    Raised kerbs at the bus stops to reduce the step up or down onto buses
    Textured pavements
    Hearing loop systems at key points
    Signage is generally pictograms, raised and textured where accessible, to give simple and intuitive navigation to non-English speaking visitor
